My friends and I whiled away a hot afternoon floating peacefully in a secret inlet only footsteps from “King’s Landing” in Old Town Dubrovnik, which itself was teeming with sweaty tourists.
And tucked away behind a busy street in Riga, Latvia, there’s a cozy bookstore with a reading nook outside that would burst Instagrammer hearts everywhere. There’s a tiny cafe inside, and after we pondered much too long over what to order, the handsome barista whipped up an off-menu mulled wine, just for us to try.
A tapas bar in Barcelona, a milkshake shop in Oxford, a nondescript gyros stand in Athens.
These are the settings of some of my very sweetest memories (um, fitting that it’s really all about food) – a collection of places in which I’ve felt the soul of a city. Their common thread is that I’d heard about each of them through locals and friends. Friends from the Internet, friends from work, friends-of-friends(-of-friends, sometimes).
In that same spirit, I started I Heard Somewhere – to pass along the hidden gems, and the not-so-hidden ones too. To share the tips for exploring a particular place that leveled up my own experiences. And really, let’s be honest, to beg you for some recommendations in return as well. Ah, the ulterior motive.
With that, let’s get this show on the road!
